Matthew Armitage draws upon influences of primitive blues, the dawn of rock’n’roll boogie, modern electronic music and exotic travel, real and imagined. Forever experimenting with new sounds and instruments, his music always showcases a unique style of guitar playing.
Hailing from New Zealand, Matthew Armitage is an accomplished multi instrumentalist, songwriter and singer who has worked with a broad mix of NZ Bands throughout his career – Good Laika, Odessa, Bunnies on Ponies, Family Cactus, Ginger Brown and Boomshack Band – some taking him overseas to Berlin and New York, but only in the last couple of years has he exposed his own voice and songwriting talents.
In 2014 Armitage quietly released his first EP, Over Oceans which brings together elements of South Pacific soul, raw garage blues and mellow psychedelia to form his first chapter as a solo musician.
Now residing in coastal Northern NSW, 2016 sees Armitage playing over 250 gigs a year around Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, both as a solo blues man singer/songwriter and in two bands- popular Byron Bay 60’s cult Hollywood, surf, jive and blues duo, The Swamps and another duo, Chesta Hedron, an all original, heavy psych, kraut rock, surf instrumental band who released a 5 track EP Infinite Nought April 2016. Their music has been used for the sonic back drop to Quiksilver Pro 2016 contest wrap videos- Radical Times on the Gold Coast and Radical Times in Western Australia.
