Day 4 – Monday 15 October

 2.30pm – Backtrack Boys

Rusty, Zach, and Alfie are on a perilous course toward ‘juvey’ until they meet up with a rule-breaking jackaroo, Bernie Shakeshaft, and hit the road with his legendary dog jumping team. This inspiring coming of age story follows the boys as they strive to turn their lives around – and the dogs that help tame their wild ways.

5.00pm – Arctic

Overgård, a pilot played by Mads Mikkelsen, has crash-landed in the frozen wilderness of the Arctic, where he has been stranded for some time. A helicopter rescue mission fails horribly, leaving another survivor, a comatose woman. Overgard is forced to act. Shot in Iceland, Arctic is a solo-survival film, with the rugged hero battling all that harsh nature and fortune can throw at him. Here there’s the cold, hunger, and polar bears. This captivating slow-build adventure is the first feature from Brazilian Joe Penna, who tells the story with an unflashy integrity and even some grim humour. As the character has only his will to fall back on, the film demands of us to ask whether we would have what it takes.

7.30pm – Pick of the Litter

Pick of the Litter is set to win the hearts and minds of the festival audience as it traces the lives of a litter of puppies from the moment they’re born and begin their quest to become Guide Dogs for the Blind. It’s the ultimate canine career and despite being almost unbearably adorable, not every candidate makes the grade. The cameras follow these pups through a two-year odyssey as they train to become dogs whose ultimate responsibility is to protect their blind partners from harm. We meet a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing, life-changing things in the service of their human. Only the best of the best make the cut. The pick of the litter.
