Set in the Scottish highlands of 1727, The Last Witch is a story of suspicion and intrigue. With a deeply mysterious core, Rona Munro’s play seethes with poetry and grippingly powerful emotion as dark circumstances circle around Janet Horne and her daughter, Helen.
The darkness is born out of the grinding poverty of their lives and in the vengeful hearts of men who struggle with accepting a free-spirited, independent woman who is not afraid of them. Eventually their haphazard attempts at controlling her unconventional ways result in her downfall.
Men rule, but real power resides in the emotional lives, friendships, and the sensuality of women. Munro plays confidently with uncertainty and skips along the line between fantasy and reality with playful ease, examining an old
world of darkly ancient beliefs and an emerging new one where a different kind of knowledge flourishes.
Based on a true story, Janet Horne stands accused of Witchcraft and Consorting with the Devil, revealing how the Devil can appearin many faces.
