The Marvelous Wonderettes is a fairy floss-coloured musical trip down memory lane, following four girls from performing at their High School Formal to taking to the stage again at their 10-year reunion. Beginning with hopes and dreams as big as their petticoats and circle skirts audiences experience the lives and loves of these four girls through ten years of growing into womanhood. The story is a musical one, told through 30 chart-topping hits spanning the best of the 50’s and 60’s.
Act I, the fifties, is reflected in the music of the time, built as it was on both the optimism of re-building after World War II and the beginnings of restless youth. Act II captures the changes of the Sixties, a decade of revolution in politics, music and society, particularly in the rights and self-determination of women.
With four-part harmonies and a backing band the four girls entertain with 30 of the decades’ greatest, including Stupid Cupid, Lipstick on Your Collar, Son of a Preacher Man, Respect, and It’s My Party. The tone ranges from lightweight – Lollipop – to the profound – You Don’t Own Me – with lots of toe-tapping favourites in between. This Australian premiere of The Marvelous Wonderettes is directed by Paul Belsham and is a fun musical romp through the lives of four women, with great music, dancing and costumes.
