Join us for our 8th Mullum Festival
Mullum Music Festival (Nov 19-22) announces its most international and diverse line up yet, bringing artists from across the globe and musical spectrum to create its signature 4-day joyous gumbo of musical delights in the halls, pubs, churches and streets of the coastal town of Mullumbimby.
Canadian troubadour Ron Sexsmith fittingly headlines this little gem of a festival that flies under the commercial radar. Often referred to as a ‘best kept secret’, Sexsmith’s gift for captivating songwriting that fuses the melodic and melancholic has gained him such ‘niche’ devotees as Elvis Costello, Chris Martin, Radiohead and Bob Dylan. After 6 years, he steps back on Australian shores at Mullum Festival with his band and recently released 14th album Carousel One, to showcase two decades worth of classic song craftsmanship.
This year Mullum also welcomes singer songwriter Ben Ottewell from UK indie rock band Gomez, extraordinary contemporary pianist/composer Hauschka from Germany, as well as the The California Honeydrops who will make the Pacific crossing, bringing their R&B/funk/Southern soul energy and infectious dance-party vibes. A very rare solo performance by Robert Forster will be a Sunday highlight of the festival, celebrating the release of his first album in seven years, out on 18th September 2015.
Legendary soul/reggae band Trinity Roots spearhead the Kiwi contingent. Regarded by many as the spiritual keeper of the NZ sound, Trinity Roots frontman Warren Maxwell was a driving force in Fat Freddy’s Drop and also heads up acclaimed band Little Bushmen. They are joined by Cornerstone Roots and the next generation of NZ artists – Thomas Oliver and Estere.
Festival patron Harry James Angus of The Cat Empire will once again keep Mullum punters shimmying and wiggling late into the night with his speakeasy Jazz Party featuring an ever-evolving roster of Melbourne’s finest instrumentalists and singers. It’s just one of the places you’ll be treated to unforgettable moments where artists from the festival spontaneously get up to join the jam. In other venues Emma Donovan and the Putbacks, Bullhorn and Captain Dreamboat will bring the funk, soul and brass in spades to fire up the refreshingly democratic Mullum dancefloors.
We Two Thieves songbirds Danielle Caruana (Mama Kin) and Emily Lubitz (also performing with her band Tinpan Orange) will debut songs from their new album as well as present a special concert of Nina Simone songs with Harry James Angus. The multi-talented Elana Stone will perform with her band All Our Exes Live in Texas as well as provide the live musical score for the theatre piece Hooting and Howling.
Elsewhere ones to watch Tora, Jones Jnr, Hein Cooper, Mt Warning, Montaigne and Oh Pep! will flood Instagram accounts while kids and the young-at-heart will be enthralled by a whirlwind of circus acts, street theatre, flash dance mobs and rides on the psychedelic Magic Bus…
